Potassium and Phosphorus Management

Both potassium and phosphorus are critical minerals that the kidneys help regulate. However, in individuals with kidney disease, excess levels of these minerals can be harmful.

  • Potassium: Elevated potassium levels can lead to dangerous heart issues, including arrhythmias. A kidney-friendly diet often involves limiting high-potassium foods like bananas, oranges, and potatoes.
  • Phosphorus: When kidneys can’t effectively filter phosphorus, it builds up in the blood, weakening bones and causing vascular calcification. Foods high in phosphorus, like dairy, nuts, and colas, should be limited.

Effective management involves choosing foods lower in these minerals, maintaining balanced levels, and possibly taking binders under medical supervision.
